Up for a 5 Day Auction is this Deluxe Edition of "The English Note-Books" of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Volume I. This edition was published by James R. Osgood And Company, Late Ticknor & Fields, Osgood, & Co. It was Electrotyped and Printed by Welch, Bigelow, & Co., Cambridge. The work was copyrighted by Sophia Hawthorne in 1870, six years after his death. Hawthorne was born in Salem, Ma in 1804. He attended Bowdin College, Me., from 1821 till 1824. Two of his classmates were Longfellow and Franklin Pierce, future 14th President. In 1842 he married Sophia. In 1853, newly elected President Pierce assigned Hawthorne Consul in Liverpool, England. This volume contains entries from his notebooks beginning in August of 1853 till the spring of 1856. It is a wonderful read. The major condition issue, pictured, is that the front book board is completely separated. The back bookboard is attached but compromised. The text binding is quite tight. There is little to no foxing. The leather covering of the spine either is completely worn or perhaps has come off....that I do not have. The gorgeous book boards are in nice condition except for the tear to the surface on the front cover, pictured. There is beautiful marbling to the inner book boards and opposite pages. The page endings are gold tipped. The book measures 4 and a half by 6 inches. There are 391 pages. This surely is a treasure waiting for the right home!
