Description

This antique mathematics school exercise or note book is a unique and valuable addition to any collection of beautiful 18th or 19th century calligraphy examples or simply, best math examples and practices, Addition of Integers, Subtraction of Integers being the first pages, with examples of each, and this method of explanation is followed throughout and includes all mathematical examples in everyday life, and shows the evolution of money used in the new United States, going from workings in £sd, (pounds, shillings and pence), the British system of currency issued in all the original states, to titled pages or sections showing the addition and division of “Federal money”. It is these examples that give the best estimate for telling the age of the book, with the Act or the final transition of currency being passed in 1857 finally, so the examples showing the ‘old money’ being used before that…my best guess therefore is that the book was largely written in the period between 1857 and before the National Banking Act of 1863, which made pounds and shillings obsolete. However the history of US money is so hard to fathom, even researching it online and getting a hard and fast answer seems impossible, I leave thinking that it could have also been written as early as the 1790s… It features 115 ( not numbered, just counted,) pages of handwritten content and is bound in beautiful leather. The school age, young person who wrote these wonderful examples of math theory in action, using contemporary scenarios of the time, came from Connecticut, this book was found at an estate sale in Tryon, NC at an historic old inn, turned family home. The book is obviously all original and is in a condition you would expect of a school work book, handled everyday and thrown into a bag or desk on a daily basis. There are 2 loose pages towards the end of the book, but all pages are there to make the working out examples flow as they should…. Scuffs on the marbled covers, wear on the leather binding, all good signs of belonging to an otherwise carefree, early American, but obviously well housed young man from a well to do family of the time. BE SURE TO CHECK OUT ALL THE PICTURES TO SEE THE TYPES OF CATEGORIES THAT WERE DETAILED…and that is by far the least of them, there are many more ! The subject of the book is mathematics and shows it’s use and applications in every day life in early America. The book is a illustrative manuscript, showing applications of mathematical theory in many examples of everyday, early American life, all handwritten. A perfect gift for collectors of antique books and manuscripts especially for those interested in early Americana and mathematics. Shipping this insured only.
